Not a big fan of talkbacks myself. I’ve got a blog entry that discusses it at http://www.weebelly.com/06/getting-it-upgoes-limp/; but the long and short of it, as a fellow playwright I know said, “The feedback isn’t even for you, really, it’s to let the audience think that they have some input in the process; but mostly, it’s for the theater…” Presumably to demonstrate that they’re the kind of theatre that does these sorts of things.

I think in every one I’ve had it’s 95% picky little things, and often I’m just left shaking my head. The other 5% is people point out things that, as the author, I had already considered, dismissed, explored, etc.

I think it’s great that you’re as open as you are to this process. Wish I was.

It’s interesting listening to the banter in the background as the guy is dismantling the mine: “Draw the square [around the bomb] bigger” and “Look at the rubbish inside, is it still active,” and there’s also some nice play on words about how cheap the bomb was to make, how many lives it would have cost and (by the transitive property) how cheap life is.

Yea, I totally agree. I’m thinking specifically of the scene where he gets into a middle-aged fist fight with his conservative friend, and the poker night scene where his gay friend tells the table about the origin of “faggot”. Both are great scenes that need to be broadcast somehow, someway, to an audience that needs them.

Lately, I’ve been prepping for opening nights (and other big events) by trucking down to Chinatown and getting a 90-minute massage. That’s right, a full 1.5 hours. Mostly because I always have this feeling at openings that it’s not for me; it’s for everyone else. So it’s nice to do something beforehand that is completely, unquestionably, luxuriously for me.
